Short selling, otherwise known as 'shorting' or 'going short', is when an investor 'borrows' shares from another investor (usually via a broker) and makes a promise to hand them back at some point in the future.
You have probably heard the old saying 'buy low and sell high.' Well, a short-seller does the opposite, attempting to 'sell high and buy low'.
A short-seller is hoping to repurchase the shares at a lower price at some point in the future than what they sold them for, ultimately pocketing the difference between the selling price and the buyback price of the shares.
