The ASX trading times run from 9:59:45^ AM until 4:21:30. Throughout the day, the market will move to different 'phases' which will impact your ability to place, amend and fill orders. Below is a summary of the key times and activities during a trading day.
Pre-Open (7:00:00 AM to 9:59:00* AM)
You can enter, amend or cancel any orders during this time. They will be queued in order of price-time priority until the market opens.
Opening Single Price Auction (9:59:00* AM)
Only order cancellations will be permitted during this period. You will not be able to amend or place new orders during the OSPA period, so it’s essential to have your orders placed during the Pre-Open period (7:00:00 – 9:59:00 am) if you wish to trade on market open.
Open/Normal Trading (9:59:45* AM to 4:00:00 PM)
The market opens at 9:59:45 AM. The 'Opening Price' is calculated using an ASX algorithm at the beginning of the Open phase when an even or overlapping market exists. During this period, orders can be placed, amended, cancelled and filled. The majority of trades will take place in this period. As part of ASX SR15, the staggered opening of the market has been removed, and all tradeable stock codes will move to Open simultaneously.
Pre-CSPA (4:00:00 PM to 4:10:00 PM)
Between 16:00:00 and 16:10:00, Sydney time, the market is placed in the Pre-CSPA phase. Orders may be placed, amended and cancelled, but no orders will be filled.
Closing Single Price Auction (4:10:00** PM to 4:11:00 PM)
The 'Closing Price' is calculated using an ASX algorithm at the beginning of the Closing Single Price Auction phase when an even or overlapping market exists. This is similar to the opening phase, where the closing price is dynamic and can change up until the random closing time.
Post-Close Trading Session (4:11:00 PM to 4:21:30 PM)
A new Post-Close Trading Session will be available immediately following the Closing Single Price Auction (CSPA). This additional session will run from 4:11:00 pm to 4:21:30 pm, during which extra liquidity can be traded at the fixed closing auction price of the instrument. This will only be available to stocks that participate in the closing single price auction.
^ The earliest transition from OPSA to continuous trading (Open) will occur at 09:59:45
