You can secure your account using one of the following MFA methods:
- Authenticator app (recommended)
- SMS passcode
Do I need to set up MFA?
Setting up MFA is strongly recommended, but not required.
If you haven’t set up MFA using an authenticator app or SMS passcode, you’ll still be able to access your account. When MFA is required, you’ll be asked to verify your identity using a one-time passcode sent to your registered email address.
You can strengthen your account security at any time by setting up MFA using an authenticator app or SMS passcode.
When will I be asked to use MFA?
You won’t be asked to use MFA every time you log in.
MFA is only requested when we detect higher-risk activity, such as:
- Signing in from a new or unknown device or browser
- Using incognito or private browsing mode
- Making certain account management changes
Once a device or browser is recognised, you usually won’t be prompted again unless something changes.
How do I set up MFA using an authenticator app?
Authenticator apps generate secure, time-based codes and don’t rely on mobile coverage, making them the most secure MFA option.
What you’ll need
An authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator.
How to set it up
MFA using an authenticator app can currently only be enabled via the Selfwealth web app. Once enabled, it will also apply to the Selfwealth mobile app.
- Log into the Selfwealth web app here
- Select Settings, then go to the Personal Details tab
- In the Multi-factor Authentication section, select Enable Authenticator
- Follow the prompts and store your recovery codes in a safe place
- Use your authenticator app to scan the QR code displayed on screen and complete the activation.
Once activated
- You’ll need to enter an authenticator code, in addition to your usual login details, when MFA is required
- You’ll be asked to re-enter your login details the next time you use the Selfwealth mobile app
How do I set up MFA using an SMS passcode?
SMS passcodes are sent to your registered Australian mobile number and require mobile coverage to receive the code.
How to set it up
MFA using SMS passcodes can currently only be enabled via the Selfwealth web app. Once enabled, it will also apply to the Selfwealth mobile app.
- Log into the Selfwealth web app here
- Select Settings, then go to the Personal Details tab
- In the Multi-factor Authentication section, select Enable SMS Passcode
- Add or update your mobile number
- Verify the number by entering the SMS passcode sent to your phone and complete the activation
Once activated
- You’ll need to enter an SMS passcode, in addition to your usual login details, when MFA is required
- You’ll be asked to re-enter your login details the next time you use the Selfwealth mobile app
Can I change my MFA method or update my details later?
Yes. You can manage your MFA methods at any time from the Settings page on the Selfwealth web app.
- If you have both an authenticator app and SMS passcode enabled, we’ll always use the authenticator app when MFA is required.
- You can choose to turn off the authenticator app if you would prefer to use SMS passcodes instead.
- Once SMS passcode is enabled, it can’t be removed, but you can update the mobile number linked to it at any time or add an authenticator app for increased security.
What if I lose access to my authenticator device?
During the setup process for authenticator MFA, you will be provided with a set of recovery codes. These can be stored in a safe place (either written or digitally) so that you can recover your account if you lose access to your authenticator device.
If you don't have your codes, don't panic! Simply reach out to us via live chat or email with your account details ready and we can assist in recovering your account.
